Pittsburgh Iota Chapter President
Jana’a Shields is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She made history in graduating in the first class ever from a local faith-based college prep high school called The Neighborhood Academy. Jana’a also graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies, and a concentration in Print Journalism. Between her passion for writing and her love for various forms of artistic expression she struggled to find her purpose.
Jana’a once dreamed of owning her own hair salon to be fully immersed in business and art. So, she studied at Empire Beauty School passing the State Boards on the first attempt becoming a Licensed Cosmetologist. Jana’a worked as a hairstylist and make-up artist until she got uncomfortable with the direction of her life. That prompt her to begin pursuing ownership. In the process of that pursuit, she discovered her true purpose.
Although Jana’a was a very talented and successful Cosmologist she never felt truly fulfilled. She realized that her true passion was Counseling. Jana’a worked as a Residential Counselor in three different populations over the last ten years. She has always had a great sense of fulfillment in the profession. Being instrumental in the success of someone living the life they dreamed of and seeing it through gave Jana’a great drive.
She put down her apron and her comb and picked up her pen and counseling books. She is now a full-time student at Walden University in pursuit of her Master of Science Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Jana’as goal is to become a Licensed Professional Counselor and continue to help people breakthrough and live passionately on a much grander scale.
Jana’a is also working full-time as a Team Leader/Residential Counselor for Invision Human Services. She resides in the City of Pittsburgh with her son Tripp.
